Though there are many rewards to being a Transit Operator, there are also many challenges. Some of these challenges are due to the seniority-based system that determines an Operator's hours of work, vacation time, days off, and others, due to the nature of the job itself. These challenges can impact the Operator's personal and family life. The following is a description of what the new operator may expect.
Winnipeg Transit operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year. New operators will be required to work weekends and holidays and days off may not be consecutive or consistent.
Though there are buses on the road 24 hours a day, the majority of shifts take place between the hours of 05:00-02:30. New operators will work both day and night shifts, at times changing from one to the other with little notice.
Daily work assignments are between 7.5-8.5 hours in length and will often be split shifts that consist of 2 or 3 pieces of work that may take more than 12 hours to complete.
The new operator can expect to be placed on what is known as the spare board. This position means that work assignments will change daily, hourly and at times, upon very short notice. Each Operator does have a guarantee of 75 hours biweekly, which is subject to certain conditions.
Though each new operator will receive 3 weeks vacation after the first year, the choice of when they are taken will be limited by seniority.
As seniority increases, so does an Operator's choice of hours, of vacation time and of days off.
Weather conditions, construction, traffic, difficult passengers and following a set schedule are just some of the challenges that the operator will face on a daily basis.
Operators will have the opportunity to demonstrate good judgement and strong sense of responsibility that is part of a customer service postion that requires the ability to work under limited supervision serving the citizens of Winnipeg.
Bus Operators enjoy a superior benefits package and competitive wage scale.
Opportunities for career advancement within the Transit System do exist.
