Back to School Transit Tips

Going back to school can be enough of a challenge without having to learn your transit routes on your first day. To avoid added stress, learn your bus route in advance so that when you ride to school and back your ride is safe and enjoyable. Below are Winnipeg Transit's safe riding tips that will help new users prepare for riding the bus this school year while giving a refresher to the more experienced school riders.

New to transit

  • Use Winnipeg Transit's Navigo trip planner to plot your bus route to and from school. Navigo will give you up to five travel options, including the routes to use, the bus stops to get on and off, where to transfer, and the schedule times. You can also print a personalized map that shows the details of your trip.
  • Ride your route with a parent before school starts so you are familiar with the route you will be taking. This will help to prevent you from missing a stop.
  • If you miss your stop, or get lost, talk to your bus driver who will assist you in getting you to where you need to go.
  • Our drivers are in communication with our control centre. If an incident occurs where you feel threatened and need the police or an ambulance, let your driver know and he/she will call for assistance.
  • Keep valuables like cell phones and ipods out of plain sight. Don't make yourself a target by leaving these items on your lap or on the seat beside you.
  • Please have your fare ready when you board the bus. If you require a transfer, make sure to ask for one at the time you pay your fare.
  • Students between the ages of 17 and 21 are eligible for reduced transit fares when they show their valid high school photo identification card or Winnipeg Transit's Go Card at the time of fare payment.

General Travel Tips

  • Exact fare is required. Bus drivers do not carry change.
  • Whenever possible, exit the bus through the rear door. This allows for faster loading and unloading and helps to keep buses on schedule.
  • For the safety of all passengers, keep bags, skateboards, and other items out of the aisle and on your lap
  • If all the seats are occupied and you need to stand, move as far back as possible after boarding and make sure to hold one of the hand rails or overhead bars when the bus is moving.
  • Priority seats at the front of the bus are designated for people traveling with a mobility device like a wheelchair, seniors and people with limited mobility, and parents with strollers. When asked, please give up your seat if you are sitting in the priority seating areas.
  • Our buses are not garbage cans. Remember to take off the bus all that you brought on the bus. This applies to coffee cups, drink bottles, newspapers, and other items.

William Street Closure

August 15 - While William Ave is closed between Main St and King St Winnipeg Transit will be running the following re-routes:

Downtown Spirit 3 and 12 William will operate:
East on William, south on Princess, east on McDermot, north on King, west on Rupert, south on Princess, west on William to regular route.

26 Logan-Berry will operate:
South on Main, west on Rupert, south on Princess, east on James, north on King to regular route.

Diamond Lane Enforcement Test

On July 18 Winnipeg Transit will begin testing a photo enforcement camera to monitor traffic in the Diamond Lane on Southbound Osborne St at Mostyn Pl. The photo enforcement camera will be tested over a six month period to research the feasibility of using photo safety technology to monitor compliance of diamond lanes.

Images will be captured of vehicles not adhering to the Diamond Lane restriction during the 3:30pm to 5:30pm time period, when all traffic except buses and cyclists must turn right (at the first available right hand turn). However, drivers will not be ticketed during the 6 month trial period.

When motorists illegally use diamond lanes, Transit service is negatively impacted in terms of reliability and schedule adherence. As well, traffic not complying with Diamond Lane traffic controls can pose serious safety risks to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
